A new feature relates to the lighter side of life science that we call "Toons & Teasers" where we include select cartoons, posters and other images from yesterday and today related to the FDA, hazardous products, health crisis and other topics.

A special feature from today include our own cartoon creations, done by the award winning illustrator Mark Reeve. One new original cartoon, will be published each month and released as a four piece puzzle. The initial illustrations chronicle the COVID-19 Pandemic and other topics. June 8 is Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

June 8 is Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The annual Caribbean-American Health/AIDS Awareness Day was created to provide Caribbean-Americans with resources, HIV/AIDS health education, evaluation, and opportunities for involvement. The goal is to beat the odds and to ensure that we cultivate a health conscious atmosphere within our communities.

This day is a part of a National effort to get Caribbean-Americans to get educated, get evaluated, get treated and get involved with their health decisions, as HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Cancer, High Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular diseases continues to negatively affect the Caribbean communities resulting in premature deaths.

LifeScience Moment: Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes and the Tripe Crown in record setting time

LifeScience Moment: Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes and the Tripe Crown in record setting time

On June 9, 1973 Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths and a time of 2:24 flat, which broke the stakes' record by more than two seconds, aother record that still stands.

Secretariat, the record setting winner of the Triple Crown in 1973, had a heart estimated to be 22 pounds or two-and-three-quarters times as large as that of the average horse which is approximately 8.5 pounds.

Secretariat's large heart can be genetically traced to the legendary Eclipse, foaled in England for the Duke of Cumberland in 1764. The larger heart is passed down the female line on the X chromosome.

Today, this genetic knowledge combined with ultrasound imaging technology helps breeders take advantage of the X Factor.
