Summary:

Seagen is looking for an experienced protein engineer to lead a collaborative team of Scientists and Research Associates engaged in novel therapeutic protein design. This team is a part of our Therapeutic Discovery Research group and is focused on therapeutic applications of protein technologies such as bispecific / biparatopic antibodies, Fc optimization, and non-antibody scaffolds for targeted drug delivery. The team collaborates with other protein engineers engaged in bioconjugation technologies as well as chemists and biologists from across our Research organization. The purpose of this team is to design improved protein-based therapeutic candidates for oncology indications that will advance to our clinical pipeline. In addition, the group lead is accountable for supporting the career development of their teammates and maintaining a positive, growth-minded culture.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, oversee, and manage the Therapeutic Protein Design team.
  • Manage execution of preclinical research activities on a portfolio of projects and initiatives focused on the design and development of improved protein-based therapeutics.
  • Develop new technology platforms that can drive growth of Seagen’s therapeutic pipeline in collaboration with teams across the Research organization.
  • Monitor technological developments within the field, identify opportunities for in-licensing, and work with colleagues in Corporate Development to implement external partnerships.
  • Effectively collaborate with scientists from other groups, including protein engineers, immunologists, cancer biologists, and organic chemists as needed to effectively and efficiently advance project goals.
  • Mentor team members with a focus on career development, integration into project teams, and technical training.
  • Align with key stakeholders across Research to anticipate needs and prioritize work.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in structural biology, biochemistry, or other relevant discipline and 8+ years of biotech or pharma experience in cancer drug discovery and development.
  • Track record of development and application of protein engineering technologies toward therapeutic design.
  • Ability to think strategically and proactively identify problems and devise solutions that move the projects forward.
  • Minimum of 4 years directly managing a team of scientific staff with the responsibility of hiring, developing, and accountability of performance.
  • Selfless, passionate, and highly collaborative leader.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback, coach, mentor, and develop employees.
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and a variety of disciplines.
  • Strong communication skills and an ability to articulate project strategy to collaborators and management.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Experience with the discovery and development of bispecific antibody technologies
  • A strong history of scientific accomplishments documented by high quality publications and patents
  • Thorough knowledge and expertise in preclinical drug discovery and understanding of the evolving oncology landscape
  • Knowledge of and experience with antibody-drug conjugate technologies
  • Knowledge of modern computational protein design
