Biotechnology and life science are top employers in Massachusetts, one of the nation’s leaders in the industry. Nearly 500 biotechnology firms reside in Massachusetts. The talented workforce consists of over 30,000 workers, the highest numbers of which hold a four-year or advanced degree. The state generally attracts the highest concentration of scientific graduate students. Massachusetts gained $1.48 billion in fiscal year 2000 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ranking it second only to California in funding. Massachusetts also contains the top five independent hospitals to receive support from the NIH.

There are state-based incentive programs as well as the nation’s largest state-based biotechnology association, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council. Additionally, Massachusetts boasts many medical device companies, such as Smith & Nephew Endoscopy and Philips Medical Systems. The medical device industry is represented by the Massachusetts Medical Device Industry Council. Programs such as the Emerging Technology Fund work towards ensuring continued growth and success for technology in Massachusetts.

Massachusetts hosts many globally recognized biotech and pharmaceutical companies, including Millennium Pharmaceuticals, AstraZeneca International, Boston Scientific, Genzyme, Wyeth BioPharma, PerkinElmer, and Affymetrix. Additionally such esteemed research institutions as Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Joslin Diabetes Center call Massachusetts home.

The Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, operating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), seeks to define innovative research via teaching affiliations. The Massachusetts Society for Medical Research promotes the health and well-being of people, animals, and the environment. Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives promotes laboratory space and support services in order to provide growth of start-up companies. With so many tremendous resources in one state, the future of biotechnology in Massachusetts seems assured.
